Then, the movie comes along, and suddenly the roughest plot point is over deciding to drop out of school, and Danny letters in track, diluting his greaser bonafides. Most 21st Century productions would be more accurately described as adaptions from the movie, which once held the distinction of the top-selling movie soundtrack of all time.

The tough city kids have been suburbanized, sanitized, anglicized, and rendered more harmless with each adaptation.
