The Keller family hired Annie Sullivan to teach Helen. Helen had been left blind and deaf by an illness at a young
age. Sullivan was unable to communicate with her through speech. Therefore, Sullivan taught Helen language by
spelling words into her hand. Although "doll" was the first word spelled into her hand, Helen did not understand
what was happening at first. She finally understood the meaning of language a few weeks later, with the word
"water." Learning language changed Helen into an eager scholar.
