After reading about the Salem witch trials and the Red Scare of the 1950's, it is easy to see how fear can seize a community or society and have disastrous effects. Arthur Miller lived three centuries after the Salem witch trials occurred, yet he found many similarities between the things that were taking place in his time and the mass hysteria of 1692.
