What tone does the author create by referring to himself as "a butterfly
chaser, googly eyed bleeding heart, and wild conservative"?
One should admit at the outset to a certain bias. Indeed I
am a "butterfly chaser, googly eyed bleeding heart and wild
conservative." I take a dim view of dams; I find it hard to
learn to love cement; I am poorly impressed by concrete
aggregates and statistics in the cubic tons. But in this
weakness I am not alone, for I belong to that ever-growing
number of Americans, probably a good majority now, who
have become aware that a fully industrialized, thoroughly
urbanized, elegantly computerized social system is not
suitable for human habitation. Great for machines, yes. But
unfit for people.

to kill a mockingbird basically is about a lawyer who goes against everything in a racist society like at the time of this novel, to defend a black man accused of sexual abuse. in the bible there are cases like that of joseph, who was accused by the woman of potifar, for a crime similar to that of tim robbinson, of that novel (genesis 39: 1-20). at this point we see that god also provides the escape to joseph, who was accused unjustly, but in his time, and through his attitude, his faith was not shaken, and god provided the solution. the perspective of god also written in the bible and not pay evil with evil. (ephesians 4: 32, 1 thessalonians 5: 15, 1 peter 3: 9). atticus, the lawyer, demonstrated during this lee novel, empathy, love of neighbor, understood the situation of this accused man. he went against everything in that society, and stood in favor of that man, for the injustice committed. this shows the empathy, the love taught by christ, in some passages that speak of love and justice in the sermon of the beatitudes (especially verses 6 and 7 of matthew 5).

romeo and juliet, family means a lot more than a husband, wife, and 2.5 kids. "family" means everyone from the head of the household down to the lowly servants—anyone who could possibly owe any the capulets or montagues loyalty. if you're thinking "street gang" or "mafia movie," you're not too far off. that's why romeo and juliet's little love affair isn't just going to get them grounded; it's a betrayal of absolutely everything—like dating someone from a rival school or, yeah, a rival gang. we might think of family as a place of refuse and security, but, in romeo and juliet, kinship is more often a source of danger and battle.
