What makes this passage ironic?
The actions that Mr. Shiftlet takes while
picking up a hitchhiker contradict the values
he claims to have.
Mr. Shiftlet talks about the importance of
family, but he has just left his wife at a
roadside diner.
Mr. Shiftlet says that his mother is the most
moral person he knows, but she isn't even a
part of his life.
