What does the author accomplish through this paragraph in the passage?

While it seems obvious that our glasses should be filled with water instead of our mugs with coffee, it is not always easy to break the coffee habit. Once a person drinks coffee consistently over a period of time, his or her body comes to expect the effects of drinking it. The body actually becomes addicted. Caffeine withdrawal is no laughing matter as it can cause headaches, stomachaches, difficulty concentrating, and trouble sleeping. It is important, though, that Americans not passively accept that caffeine is a necessary part of life. While it is difficult to loosen the grip of caffeine on our bodies, withdrawal symptoms are only temporary, and they are worth the effort to make our bodies healthier. The answer is clear: Americans should cut the coffee.
