Johnsy keeps on counting the falling Ivy leaves since she thought that once the last leaf falls she is going to die, however, the contrary happens, Bhermn who was the painter standing in the rain and painting the leaf for her, had to die.

An old, old ivy vine, gnarled and decayed at the roots, climbed half way up the brick wall. The cold breath of autumn had stricken its leaves from the vine until its skeleton branches clung, almost bare, to the crumbling bricks.
