The Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man, and the lost girl named Dorothy are familiar images in popular culture. They have become icons because of one movie. In 1939, the story The Wizard of Oz was introduced to audiences in a film directed by Victor Fleming. This movie was adapted from the beloved book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. The story is of a girl named Dorothy and her adventures in the Land of Oz.
The movie version of the story brought the book to life and altered it for cinematic purposes. Dorothy's famous ruby slippers were silver in the book, but to capitalize on Technicolor, they were changed to ruby. In addition, the role of the Wicked Witch of the West was expanded to the entire movie. She originally was in only one chapter.
When The Wizard of Oz was first released, it was a minor hit. It only made a small profit. The movie received many award nominations for its cinematic work. It even received the Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "Over the Rainbow." With subsequent showings on television, the movie became a classic. It has been rebroadcast on television almost every year. The movie has been shown on both network and cable channels, such as CBS and TBS. The American Film Institute's compiled list of the best movies ranked The Wizard of Oz as number 10 out of the top 100 movies.
