Throughout history, restricted voting has been a way for the government to stifle the voices of those they did not want to hear. In 1870, blacks were finally given the right to vote; and in 1920, Congress gave voting rights to women. Finally, Americans understood that no matter what group someone belongs to, their right to vote should be protected – except one group, teens. Through unfair voting laws, teens are told that the fundamental rights of all Americans do not apply to them.

First a small but significant detail on the voting rights women obtained in 1920: Native American women were not included. This can truely be considered as unfair voting laws, not respecting the fundamental rights of all Americans. This is racial discrimination. Now when it comes to teens it is universally accepted that a certain age (16 or more often 18) has to be reached in order to be considered to be an adult capable (intellectual) of voting in the right way. This is arbitrarian because some are capable when they are 15 years old. On the other hand there might be many who never reach this intellectual capability.
