Last June 24th, my best friend of 24 years died of cancer. Two nights before she died, I spent about an hour with her—just the two of us. Her family, exhausted, had gone home, and I sat next to her hospital bed. I just wanted to be there. The last words I ever heard her say were, "What day is it?" I turned to the calendar on the wall and replied, "It’s June 22, 1998." She just nodded her head and went back to sleep. I’ve thought about that question of hers a lot since then. She taught me many things over the years.
