(1) Lake Baikal in Russia is the oldest and deepest lake in the world. It is also the world's largest freshwater lake, and it contains 20% of the Earth's surface fresh water. The lake is home to more than 1,000 species of plants and more than 1,500 species of animals. The first Russian to discover Baikal was Kurbat Ivanov, who explored the lake in 1643.
(2) A fortress named Verkhneangarsky ostrog was built on Lake Baikal in 1647 when Kurbat Ivanov returned with fellow explorer Vasily Kolesnikov. The two explorers gathered scientific and geographical data in the area. Their data helped scientists, geologists, and geographers learn more about this fascinating area of the world.
(3) Exploration of Lake Baikal during the 20th century was primarily conducted by different branches of the government and the military. Industrialization began to increase in the area. The opening of a hydroelectric station and a paper mill near Baikal negatively affected the lake. Since 2006, the Russian government has considered a proposal to build a nuclear power plant near the lake. If built, this facility will most likely have an even greater effect on the plants and animals that make Baikal their home.
(4) The construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway at the end of the 19th century brought more geologists and geographers to Baikal. One of the most famous was Vladimir Obruchev, a Russian geologist and geographer. Obruchev was especially interested in studying the region's plant and animal life.
