What happened in the two stanzas of The Weary Blues

Stanza 1

The speaker, who is unnamed, recalls listening to a "Negro" play the piano and sing "The Weary Blues" one night on Lenox Avenue. He describes the performer as sitting on a "rickety stool" under the dull glow of a single gas light. There is just no satisfying him anymore—his happiness is gone, and he wishes he had died. The speaker imagines the bluesman sings the song until the break of day. Then the musician goes home to bed and sleeps deeply with the song still in his head.
