The central character of the poem is Beowulf, who comes to help Hrothgar from the monster Grendel. It so happens that when Beowulf goes for a fight with Grendel, Beowulf declares that he will fight without any arms or weapons. Because according to him, monsters doesn’t make use of any armor. And probably this is the irony in the poem about Beowulf.
