It is a very hot morning and you are expecting the day to just get hotter. you have noticed that one of your preschool children, max, has not been at school for the past week. the parents have not contacted the school indicating what has caused these absences. as you greet children coming in, you see max. he usually comes running and smiling to give you a big hug, but this morning he’s quiet. max is wearing dirty long jeans and a long-sleeved shirt with purple jelly on the front. his mom says, “max has been sick. he spilled his toast on him in the car. he’s not careful.” she leaves and you pat his back and he moves away to go sit alone. you notice that he is rubbing his side as if it hurts and is huddled over. during group time, another child accidentally bumps into max. max pushes the child and says, “get out of here! ” you haven’t heard max say words like that or push other children. what would you do? what might be going on with max?
