I fully support the decision to award singers-songwriters the Nobel Prize in Literature. Some lyrics in songs, if read, not only listened to, can be considered real poetry. So regardless of the medium they appear in (in a book or in a song), if the words evoke powerful emotions in the audience, then the effect is the same. If the words have a powerful cultural impact on the world, what does it matter that they appear in a song rather than on pages of a book?

It is true that Bob Dylan has published traditional poetry and prose. However, one book of poetry and one memoir would not qualify him for the prize.  All though he was a good songwriter, it does not change the fact that there is poetry in his songs.

The prize was awarded based on his songwriting, which does not qualify as literature. The first songwriter to receive the prestigious award, Dylan joins a celebrated group of laureates including Thomas Mann. Bob Dylan once stated, “Not once have I ever had the time to ask myself, ‘Are my songs literature?’” in a thank-you speech read out by the US ambassador to Sweden during the December Nobel ceremony in Stockholm. Dylan was a song writer who used his music and created a world of poetry according to the Nobel Prize. He not only had poetry in his lyrics, but was surprised he was worthy enough of the Prize. “If someone had ever told me that I had the slightest chance of winning the Nobel Prize, I would have to think that I’d have about the same odds as standing on the moon,” he added.

When Bob Dylan was awarded this exceptional prize, I completely supported the decision of the committee as they recognized the importance and beauty of his lyrics not only in music, but also in literature. The art of modern music which contains poetry should have the Nobel Prize awarded on it more often I believe because of the hard work songwriters comes from the heart of poetry.
