Alexandria enjoyed spending countless hours peering at her coin collection; she'd spent the past three years locating, cleaning, and collecting a variety of coins from different years. she loved to spread the shiny, metallic coins across the kitchen counter — always recounting and reorganizing them.
when the doorbell rang, alexandria was delighted to see her best friend micah standing on the front porch.
"do you want to play? " micah asked with a basketball in his hand and a smile on his face.
"sure," shouted alexandria as she hustled down the hallway to fetch her sneakers. when she returned, micah was gazing intently at her collection. "my mom said i can play until dinner," alexandria said excitedly.
just as they were zipping up their jackets, alexandria's mother shouted, "don't forget to clean up your coin collection." alexandria rolled her eyes; she knew that would take too long — there wouldn't be any time to play basketball. feeling annoyed and frustrated, alexandria stomped into the kitchen, quickly scraped all her coins into an empty wicker basket, and tossed it on the fireplace mantel.
the next morning, when alexandria decided to reorganize her coins, she was disappointed to find that one had mysteriously vanished. she scoured the kitchen; she took everything out of the basket and began to crawl around on the floor in hopes that she would stumble upon it. alexandria felt a knot in her stomach — the coins were her treasure.
