Araby is a great story! I just read it recently for class too. I believe that the bazaar the narrator attends is the best symbol for escaping monotony. The bazaar symbolizes everything exotic and unfamiliar to the narrator, who is experiencing a rather mundane and dreary life. He idealizes it and looks forward to going. However, when he finally gets there, he realizes that it is not all he thought it would be, which ultimately depresses him because it seems that life will never stop being monotonous.
