throughout the chapter golding calls attention to jack’s eyes and the look that is now often found in them.  how are jack’s eyes described? why do you think the author describes his eyes

ralph’s frustration with being the leader is clearly evident in this chapter.  what events or behaviors are causing his frustration? how does he handle the frustration, and why does he continue to persevere despite his frustration?

the rift between jack and ralph continues to grow in this chapter.  how do the boys try to overcome their disagreements? are they successful at reconciling their differences?   why or why not?

jack and ralph disclose to one another a deep fear that each has. beside each quote below, explain how you think these fears are the motivation for how each boy acts.

-ralph: “’people don’t much.’ he wanted to explain how people were never quite what you thought they were.”

-jack: “‘just a feeling. but you can feel as if you’re not hunting, but—being hunted, as if something’s behind you all the time in the jungle.’”

neither boy really discusses or even acknowledges the fear voiced by the other.  why don’t they?

when the topic of the continued dreams and fears of the littluns comes up, jack’s response is that he understands how they feel, while ralph reiterates his contention that it is a good island and they have simply forgotten that fact.  which boy has a better perception of the fear felt by the littluns and why?

describe simon’s character development in this chapter. which events us learn more about him? what do we learn about him?
