In this excerpt, the words "callous" and "bloody" are appealing to readers' senses of sight, touch, and even smell. Sight would be the main one, since readers can see the blood on the whip and the marks on the slaves' backs. They could also picture what it would feel like to touch the callous scars, or to smell the blood.
