How does frankenstein show romantic ideas emerging from the enlightenment

The enlightenment age was when people were encouraged to have scientific explanations for everything. They wanted to rid the world of barbarous assumptions and make everyone’s beliefs science-based. Enlightenment thinking not only effected scientific fields, but also literature.

Victor’s ‘enlightenment thinking’ is a blessing and a curse. While he had the scientific understanding to make revolutionary discoveries, this way of thinking caused him to become a ‘slave’ to his creation.

Victor was obviously meant to be revolting. Even know he ‘loved’ Elizabeth, he never understood love because he was obsessed with the idea of immortality.

In short, Victor was an inventor who created a monster. He was was a great representation of ‘enlightenment thinking’ gone too far. Shelly uses romanticism in many ways. The human elements of the victors creation coming to life, her use of the beauty in nature, and the obvious; Victors romantic obsession with both Elizabeth and the idea of immortality.
