harriet beecher stowe was a famous american author. she was born june 14, 1811, the seventh child of a famous protestant preacher. during her life, she wrote poems, travel books, biographical sketches, children's books, and adult novels. she is best known for her book, uncle tom’s cabin. through her work of fiction, she expressed her moral outrage at the institution of slavery and its destructive effects on people. the book build anti-slavery sentiments in america and abroad. when stowe met president lincoln in 1862, he is said to have exclaimed, "so you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war! "

rachel carson was an american marine biologist and a nature writer. she was born may 27, 1904. during her lifetime she wrote several books on nature, and her book, the silent spring, brought into focus the damage that mankind was doing to nature. she focused in particular on a chemical called dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (ddt), which caused the deaths of animals and birds. her book was effective in placing a complete ban on the use of ddt.
