The monsoon is an extraordinary wind. it blows in the summer
and winter. in the summer, the wind blows from the south-west. it picks up moisture from the inside ocean .
when the monsoon reaches land, it
releases that moisture as rain. in india, the coming of the summer monsoon
means the start of the rainy season.
the rains in india are unbelievably heavy. the water pours down in torrents. it
tills the major rivers to overflowing. homes and farms are washed away. people
and animals drown if they are not able to swim to safety. the monsoon changes
its direction with the seasons. in the winter, the wind blows from the north-east.
the winter monsoon is usually a dry wind. it does not bring very heavy rainfall
like the summer monsoon does.
