my writing should include--
1. a clear introduction providing an overview of the first section of the novel.
2. paragraph two should discuss the utopian aspects with evidence from the text.
the setting of the novel fahrenheit 451 by ray bradbury is set as a utopia in which the 30-year-old firefighter, guy montag lives. montag is in a society where everything people do is fun and entertaining without any question. guy montag in being a firefighter is responsible for burning any book owned and also the houses that contain them, instead of saving people from fires. the firemen do this to censor people from everything. however, montag does not know this and later notices he is not happy with the way things are with his; job, his wife mildred, and his surroundings. after meeting clarrise mcclellan, his neighbor, his curiosity begins to fill his mind. montag's wife doesn’t seem to care about how montag feels or what he does for her. even though montag and millie have been married for years, montag realizes, after the overdose incident, that he doesn't know much about his wife at all. montag now wants to quit his job. montag's boss captain beatty, has been suspicious with montag and comes over to his house before montag can call in sick. after captain beatty’s visit montag confesses to millie about his book stash. once millie panics, montag tries to explain to her that having these books can be beneficial. once they know what's inside the books they will destroy them together. captain beatty seemingly knows how montag is feeling and knows what he is hiding.
to start, this society may seem like a utopia at first, because everyone gets to do what they want and have fun without any consequences. guy montag's house has three walls that are tv screens. millie likes to enjoy watching her tv family for most of the day. people also ride jet cars at top speeds on the road. schools are mainly athletic activities and keeping students engaged, they have television classes. captain beatty stated "don't we keep them moving, don't we give them fun? that's all we live for, isn't it" (bradbury 56). this tells the reader that all there is to do is fun, and to enjoy life. the community montag lives in also has entertainment parks to have fun. montag's friend clarrise said "sometimes i even go to the fun parks and ride in the jet cars when they race on the edge of town at midnight and the police don't care as long as they're insured. as long as everyone has ten thousand insurance everyone's happy." in this society, no one care's what you do if you're covered. jet cars also seem to be the only thing people love to do in this society.

Read this excerpt from "the light of gandhi's lamp" by hilary kromberg inglis, in which she describes driving to the police station where her sister is being detained. to avoid looking at the blackened windows at the top of the building and thinking about the history of who had died or been tortured there, i always looked instead at the little chinese restaurant on the opposite side of the road. how does this passage affect the text? it conveys, with great subtlety, the conflict she felt over having a sister who would break the law and end up in the custody of the police. it conveys, without any implied moral judgment, that those who fought against apartheid considered themselves to be soldiers in a just war. it conveys, with an extended metaphor, the idea that being detained by the police in this society was regarded as a badge of honor. it conveys, with direct language, the view held by many anti-apartheid activists that the police often acted in brutal and unlawful ways.
