when learning about ancient civilizations, the way that people dressed can shed light on the culture and climate. in ancient greece, greek women wore long tunics called peplos. they were made from large pieces of rectangular fabric. then, it was draped and fastened in a variety of ways to create different styles. over the tunic, a woman wore a himation, which was a cloak draped over her shoulders. in the summer, this would be made of a thin material. then, in the winter, it would be made of a think material.
men wore a type of tunic called a chiton. it was often made out of lighter material like linen so that men could stay cool in the warm, dry climate of greece. young men wore short tunics and older men wore long tunics.
most people walked around barefoot. however, some people wore leather sandals. hats were worn in hot weather to provide shade from the sun.
