This not only creates a tension in Scrooge’s mind but also in the minds of the readers as they don’t want to see the kid dying either and the readers wonder if there is anything that Scrooge can do to save the kid.

And when the ghost quotes Scrooges earlier words, the latter becomes ashamed of his earlier attitude and behavior.
