why the human brain loves music

by: lance carson

everywhere in the world, people dance to the music of their culture. scientists wonder what it is about the human brain that makes music and dancing nearly universal experiences for human beings and what makes music so pleasurable.

1: one recent study showed that when humans listen to music, their brains organize the information based on previous experience. different areas of the brain seek patterns in the music, compare it to familiar music, and seek emotional ties to earlier experiences. mri scans identify how much a person liked a piece of new music by the strength of his or her brain activity. the amount of activity corresponded to how much the individual enjoyed the music and the strength of the person’s desire to buy the music. 2: people with higher activity levels expressed a willingness to pay more for the music than those with lower activity levels.

one researcher compared the brain’s reaction to a guessing game. “each time we hear new music, our brains try to put it into context. 3: they try to predict what’s coming next and generally make sense of it,” said dr. emily white of west orion university. her paper on the subject is scheduled to be published in the spring. “what’s more, the brain’s pleasure center is involved. if the game is fun, meaning the brain’s predictions are either correct or in some way satisfying, then the person feels pleasure.” dr. white hopes the outcome will in understanding how humans decipher speech and other complex sounds.

4: study has found that people also demonstrate some similar patterns of brain activity when they listen to the same piece of music. in this case, researchers monitored the brains of individuals who were listening to an unfamiliar piece of music—a baroque symphony. the study’s subjects all were familiar with western music.
