today, enrique is terrified of another beating. every time someone new jumps onto his car, he tenses. fear, he realizes, to keep him awake, so he decides to induce it. he climbs to the top of the tank car and takes a running leap. with arms spread, as if he were flying, he jumps to one swaying boxcar, then to another. some have four- to five-foot gaps. others are nine feet apart.

how does the narrative technique of characterization support the author’s purpose in this excerpt? it shows how difficult travel has been for enrique. it illustrates the one thing that enrique is afraid of. it explains why enrique does not want to be part of a gang. it demonstrates that enrique takes drastic measures to survive.

The excerpt shows that Enrique decides to jump from train car to train car in order to stay awake. He is so afraid of receiving another beating from someone that he doesn't want to fall asleep and let his guard down. He figures out that the adrenaline from being afraid keeps him awake so he creates the adrenaline spikes by jumping the train cars. This is a drastic measure since it is very dangerous, but he feels as though he needs to stay awake to survive.

the anecdote makes readers feel sorry for the man’s lack of heritage, then reminds readers that the man has an equally valuable heritage.

wordsworth tends to see nature as 'out there'; a presence which surrounds humans, and contributes to human life, but is different from humans. if you look at a typical wordsworth poem (there was a boy, ye knew him well ye rocks) - wordsworth talks about nature as something that needs to be learned about and understood, nature is different from us.  

if you look at a byron poem (the isles of greece is a good one) - byron looks at nature mainly for what it already means to man. wordsworth will look at a landscape and see the mountains, trees, valleys, and rivers as almost spiritual presences - wordsworth wants to get to know nature.  

byron will look at the same landscape and he will want to know who lives there, what are the villages? are there any farms or mines, is there some history?  

wordsworth looks at nature for what it is; byron is forever asking what it means.
