Orwell uses allegory in Animal Farm to expose the corruption of communists in Russia and to represent the struggles of the labor class in Russia.

George Orwell wrote Animal Farm in 1945 as a criticism to the totalitarian communist government of Joseph Stalin. Through this short novel, Orwell addresses the corruption of Stalin’s government as he depicts Napoleon as an authoritarian leader who seeks power at the expenses of the labor of the other animals. In the story, the animals are naïve enough to be easily manipulated by Napoleon, a fact that Orwell thought to be a major problem in Stalin’s dictatorship.  

On the other hand, Orwell provides a cruel depiction of the struggles of the labor class as he portrays the unfair conditions in which the animals work for the progress of the farm. By using this allegory, he implied that in communist Russia the working class was being exploited and was living in harsh conditions.
