Why can marguerite not remember the poem?

In "I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou, Marguerite cannot remember the poem because she didn't want to remember the words that reminded her how much she wanted to leave. Despite wetting herself on her way out of the church, she laughs because she was finally free.
