Ovid's "The Story of Daedalus and Icarus" tells the Greek myth in which the great inventor and architect Daedalus is imprisoned along with his son, Icarus, in a tall tower for infuriating King Minos of Crete. In order to escape, Daedalus buils wings made out of feathers and wax for the both of them.

In this story, the phrase that foreshadows the death of Icarus describes his father's actions when puting the wings on him:

In its original language: "tremuere manus; dedit oscula nato non iterum repetenda suo pennisque levatus "

In English: "As he spoke  he fitted on his son the plumed wings  with trembling hands, while down his withered cheeks  the tears were falling. Then he gave his son  a last kiss, and upon his gliding wings  assumed a careful lead solicitous."

Despite having warned him about flying too low or too high, Daedalus' hands are trembling and tears are falling down his face. And, before taking off, he gives his son a "last kiss". This presages the imminent destiny of the young boy.

jenkins wanted the narrator to write a ghost story for his magazine. he wanted the narrator to give the readers a story based on the supernatural. he wanted him to give the readers real 'horror' stories and not the type of live ghosts which he had presented in his earlier stories.
