Huckleberry Finn is a satire (hence the "shot" notice at the beginning) about society, slavery, and Christianity. Basically, it makes fun of these ideals by using, and sometimes exaggerating, those ideals in a different light. It is actually a pretty decent capture of what society was like then, because Samuel Clemins (Mark Twain) tried pretty hard to capture the dialect of the time and place.  

Some people don't like it because of that very effort, of trying to capture the dialect. Some don't like it because they don't understand it is satire. (So they claim it's racist, when even if you look at it as just a capture of the time.)

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a classic of American literature. The book has been praised for decades as a master achievement in literature. However, some have also been very critical of it.

People who praise the book have often talked about the accuracy of the events Twain describes. In particular, they believe that the author effectively captured the idiosyncrasy of the South, and the way racial topics were addressed. Part of the praise is directed towards the use of dialect in the story.

Some critics, however, have not found the book to be so enlightening. When the book was published, criticism was centered on the fact that the book was considered "coarse." Many events appeared too vulgar or immoral. Moreover, the ethical values of the characters were seriously questioned. Some critics also disliked the language used in the book, as it was considered to be unrefined. Nowadays, criticism has mostly centered on the fact that some racial depictions can be considered as racist, or as offensive to certain social groups.
