An aquifer with a unit volume of 1 m3 contains 20 L of pure trichloroethylene (TCE) released from a leaking storage tank. TCE has its solubility of 1100 mg/L and a specific gravity of 1.47. The aquifer has a porosity of 0.35, and groundwater moves through it with an actual velocity of 0.025 m/day. The dissolved TCE concentration is 20% of its solubility. (a) Estimate the total mass of TCE, mass of dissolved TCE, and the percentage of dissolved TCE.
(b) Estimate the time needed to remove all the TCE (assume the unit cross-sectional area perpendicular to the flow is 1 m2).
