A concrete dam is 32m long from the upstream side to the downstream end. The dam is situated on an 18 m thick stratum of soil that has a coefficient of permeability equal to 0.5 m per day. Firm, hard clay and rock lie underlie the described soil stratum. The base of the dam is installed at a level 2 m below the natural soil surface. Required:
Draw the flownet for seepage occurring beneath the dam, and compute seepage in cubic meter per day per meter of dam width (perpendicular to the paper) for the conditions where the reservoir water against the upstream face of the dam is 20m above the soil surface and water level at the downstream end is at 2m above the soil surface.

Aloaded platform of total mass 500 kg is supported by a dashpot and by a set of springs of effective stiffness 72 kn/m. it is observed that when the platform is depressed through a distance x = 12.5 cm below its equilibrium position and then released without any initial velocity; it reaches its equilibrium position in the shortest possible time without overshoot. find the position and velocity of the loaded platform 0.10 sec. after its release. if a further load of 400 kg is added to the platform, find, i) the frequency of damped vibrations, and i) the amplitude of vibration after 2 complete oscillations, given that the initial amplitude is 15 cm.

Awall of 0.5m thickness is to be constructed from a material which has average thermal conductivity of 1.4 w/mk. the wall is to be insulated with a material having an average thermal conductivity of 0.35 w/mk so that heat loss per square meter shall not exceed 1450 w. assume inner wall surface temperature of 1200°c and outer surface temperature of the insulation to be 15°c. calculate the thickness of insulation required.
