An engineer was asked to estimate the elastic settlement of foundations at a project site. She/he used a Shelby Tube and collected a relatively undisturbed soil sample that measured 35 mm diameter and 70 mm long. She/he conducted a triaxial shear test applying major principal stress of 170 kPa (vertical), and minor principal stresses (horizontal) of 100 kPa, allowing drainage to measure reduction in the sample volume. The changed length of soil sample was 66.5 mm, and the reduction in volume was 3.72 ml (as measured by drainage from sample) Using the 3-D stress strain equation from your E MCH 213. Calculate (a) Modulus of elasticity and (b) Poisson's ratio.
