In most finite element results, we can display stresses as any of the components, principals, or as the equivalent stress. In most basic mechanics texts, equivalent stress is calculated only after principal stresses are determined. Is this necessary? A few basic questions to answer this question.1.Write the equations to determine the three principal stresses given a general, three-dimensional stress state.2.Write the equation to determine the von Mises equivalent stress (Distorion Energy) given a general, three-dimension stress state and also the eqation given the three principal stresses.3.When viewing finite element results, which states of stress should you consider: 1) component stress, 2) principal stress or 3) equivalent stress? There may be more than one answer; if so, you need to describe when each is recommended.
