For an axial turbo pump with an impeller of 100mm diameter and running at 3000rpm, at the outer diameter the circumferential component of the absolute velocity of the fluid changes from 3m/s at the inlet to 11m/s at the outlet, while the through flow component (meridional component) stays constant with 5m/s. For the following, refer to the symbols and convention introduced in the last slide of turbo06.pdf posted.
1. For the outer diameter, determine all c, w, u velocities, the components cm, cu, wm, wu, and flow angles alpha, beta, in the absolute system and relative system at the inlet and outlet, respectively.
2. Draw the velocity triangles for the outer diameter at the inlet and the outlet. In the drawing, label with symbol, value and unit all the velocities c, w, u, the components cm, cu, wm, wu, and the flow angles alpha, beta.
3. Calculate the shaft work per unit mass of flow at the outer diameter.
4. With the inner flow diameter being 40mm and the through flow component constant across the through flow area, calculate the volume flow rate.
5. Assuming water with a density of 1000kg/m^3, calculate the mass flow rate.
6. Assuming same specific shaft work for all flow from inlet to outlet, calculate the shaft power.
7. Calculate the pressure difference that this pump would provide if it would be 100% efficient with no losses.
Clearly show your approach.
Computer drawings (CAD, power point) are encouraged. Clean hand drawings are acceptable.
Submit your drawing as pdf file to the HW07 drop box.
If the drawing is computer generated, also submit the original electronic file(s).
If the drawing is generated in CAD software also submit a DXF file beside the original file(s).
If computer software has been employed for calculations, also submit the original file (XLS, ...)
