0.05 m^3 of spherical silver particles (particle radius =5x10^-7m) are heated until they melt completely. Careful measurements show that 45,892,600 Joules of heat are absorbed by the particles during melting. Given the material data below, please calculate the surface energy per unit area (gsv) of silver in units of J/m^2. ΔHm(silver) = 88,000 J/kg, p(silver) = 10,490 kg/m^3. Note: ΔHm and p have been provided in units to make the calculation as straightforward as possible. There should be no need to convert these units to g, cm^3, etc. Recall that ΔHm is the latent heat.

Amass of 1.5 kg of air at 120 kpa and 24°c is contained in a gas-tight, frictionless piston-cylinder device. the air is now compressed to a final pressure of 720 kpa. during the process, heat is transferred from the air such that the temperature inside the cylinder remains constant. calculate the boundary work input during this process.

Amixture of slurry and mud is to be pumped through a horizontal pipe of diameter 500 mm. the fluid behaves as a bingham plastic with a yield stress of 30 pa and viscosity 0.04 pa. s. describe the effects of the shear stress through a transverse section of the pipe by plotting the variation in shear stress and velocity profile: (i) just before the slurry starts to move (ii) as the slurry flows when the pressure gradient is double that in part (i)
