An equimolar liquid mixture of benzene and toluene is fed to a distillation column. The vapor leaving the top of the column is 97% benzene. The vapor is completely condensed and split into 2 equal streams – the distillate and the reflux streams (reflux ration = 1). The recovery of benzene in the distillate stream is 89.2%. Some of the liquid leaving the bottom of the tower is recycled back into the tower as a vapor using a partial reboiler. 45% of the liquid stream entering the partial reboiler is vaporized and recycled back to the column. The liquid out of the reboiler is the final liquid product stream. The composition of the liquid/vapor streams leaving the reboiler is given by the following equation:

(ybv)/(1-ybv)/Ybt/(1-Ybt)= 2.25

Where ybv is mole fraction of benzene in vapor and ybl is mole fraction of benzene in liquid.

Required:
a. Sketch the problem.
b. Label all streams
c. Write out the material balance table.
d. Write the general material balance (for each control volume used)
e. Decide which terms stay, and which are zero (for each control volume used)
f. Write out the specific balances for each control volume.
8. Degree of Freedom Analysis- Count the possible number of unknowns, number of knowns, and remaining unknowns.
9. Write down all independent equations you would need to solve for all the variables in the material balance table.

Refrigerant 134a enters an insulated compressor operating at steady state as saturated vapor at -26°c with a volumetric flow rate of 0.18 m3/s. refrigerant exits at 9 bar, 70°c. changes in kinetic and potential energy from inlet to exit can be ignored. determine the volumetric flow rate at the exit, in m3/s, and the compressor power, in kw.

Awall of 0.5m thickness is to be constructed from a material which has average thermal conductivity of 1.4 w/mk. the wall is to be insulated with a material having an average thermal conductivity of 0.35 w/mk so that heat loss per square meter shall not exceed 1450 w. assume inner wall surface temperature of 1200°c and outer surface temperature of the insulation to be 15°c. calculate the thickness of insulation required.
