Rod 1 is made of steel, E1 = 210 GPa, α_1 = 12.5 x 10-6 °C-1, A1 = 30 cm2. Rod 2 is made of brass, E2 = 105 GPa, α_2 = 19 x 10-6 °C-1, A2 = 30 cm2. AB is a rigid member connected to a pin support at its center, and is horizontal initially. Then a load F = 50 kN is applied. To counteract deformations caused by the applied force, the temperature is also changed by ∆T to force AB to stay at its initial position. (a) Does the temperature of the system increase or decrease? (b) What is the magnitude of the temperature change ∆T?
