The early steam engines were driven by the atmosphericpressure acting on the piston fitted into a cylinder filled withsaturated

steam. A vacuum was created in the cylinder by coolingthe cylinder

externally with cold water, and thus condensing thesteam.

Consider a piston-cylinder devise with a piston surface areaof

0.1m2 initially with 0.05m3 of saturatedsteam

at the atmospheric pressure of 100kPa. Now cold water ispoured

outside the cylinder, and the steam inside starts tocondensing as a

result of heat transfer to the cooling wateroutside. If the piston

is stuck at its initial position, determinethe friction force

acting on the piston, and the amount of heattransfer when the

temperature inside the cylinder drops to30oC.

Water vapor initially at 10 bar and 400 °c is contained within a piston-cylinder assembly. the water lost heat to the surrounding according to isochoric (iso-volumetric) process until its temperature is 150 °c. the water is then condensed isothermally to saturated liquid. for the water as a system, calculate the work in kj/kg

An engine, weighing 3000 n, is supported on a pedestal mount. it has been observed that the engine induces vibration into the surrounding area through its pedestal at the maximum operating speed. determine the stiffness of the dynamic vibration absorber spring in (n/m) that will reduce the vibration when mounted on the pedestal. the magnitude of the exciting force is 250 n, and the amplitude of motion of the auxiliary mass is to be limited to 2 mm note: in this question type-in right numbers, no decimals, no fractions, no unit. approximate to right number if needed
