A cylinder of diameter D= 10 mm and temperature T, = 100°C is centrally located in an extruded square coating of bakelite of dimension w = 11 mm. The ambient tem- perature is To = 25°C and a convection coefficient of value h= 100 W/m². K exists at the outer surfaces of the bakelite. Determine the heat transfer rate per unit length of the cylinder. Plot the heat transfer rate per length over the range 10 mm Sw< 100 mm. Explain the dependence of the heat transfer rate on the bakelite thickness that is evident in your plot. Also derive the critical value of w that maximizes heat transfer from the cylinder.

1in2 processor chip can be modelled as an isothermal plane wall of silicon, isothermal on both sides. the power input to the bottom of the plane wall, or the processing power of the chip, often called the thermal design power (tdp), is 100w. assume the periphery is adiabatic. the silicon is 400 microns thick. the temperature at the junction, or in this case on the bottom of the isothermal plane wall, is 85°c. what is the top surface temperature, assuming that the only mode of heat transfer is conduction
