A bakelite coating is to be used with a 10 mm diameter rod, whose surface is maintained at 200 degrees C by passage of an electrical current through it. The rod is in a fluid at 25 degrees C, and the convection coefficient is 140 W/m2-K. a. What is the critical radius associated with the coating? b. What is the heat transfer per unit length for the bare rod (Note: this is before the Bakelite is added)? c. Now, a coating of Bakelite is added to the rod to make the radius equal to the critical radius. What is the heat transfer per unit length for the rod with the coating of Bakelite? d. How much Bakelite should be added to reduce the heat transfer associated with the bare rod by 35 percent? In other words, start with the q' of the bare rod and reduce that by 35 percent by adding Bakelite. Hint: may need to use a root finder or solver in your calculator for this one! Show your general equation and final answer.

Two flowing streams of argon gas are adiabatically mixed to form a single flow/stream. one stream is 1.5 kg/s at 400 kpa and 200 c while the second stream is 2kg/s at 500 kpa and 100 ? . it is stated that the exit state of the mixed single flow of argon gas is 150 c and 300 kpa. assuming there is no work output or input during the mixing process, does this process violate either the first or the second law or both? explain and state all your assumptions.
