A circular rod is attached to a wall. It has three gears (1, 2, 3).
Gear 1 is located D inches away from the wall.
Gear 2 is E inches away from Gear A.
Gear 3 is A + B inches away from Gear B.
The torque applied to Gear 1 is A kip-ft, Gear 2 is B kip-ft, Gear 3 is C kip-ft.
If the value of A, B,C is even the torque is positive, if odd the torque is negative.
The outdoor diameter is your largest number in centimeters. The inner diameter is your smallest number in centimeter. Make sure to convert to appropriate units.
The rod is made from Red Brass C83400 from the wall to Gear 1, Structural A-36 Steel from Gear 1 to Gear 2, and Magnesium Alloy Am 1004-T61 from Gear 2 to Gear 3.
a. Draw your diagram with clearly labeled distances, torques, etc.
b. Calculate the maximum shear stress for the three different materials.
c. How many degrees and in which direction does gear three turn in relation to the wall when all three torques are applied?
