Dr. Ben Blalock has hired us to determine the length of the power lines between two towers, and the tension in the power line. We do this by sending a longitudinal pulse and then a transverse pulse down the line. It takes 0.17 sec for the longitudinal pulse to return, and 7.6 sec for the transverse pulse to return. The power lines are made of 1.0 inch diameter aluminum wire, with E=10.3x106 psi and weighing 172 lb/ft3.
a.) What is the length of the power line?
ANSWER: 1416 ft
b.) What is the tension in the power line?

Refrigerant 134a enters an insulated compressor operating at steady state as saturated vapor at -26°c with a volumetric flow rate of 0.18 m3/s. refrigerant exits at 9 bar, 70°c. changes in kinetic and potential energy from inlet to exit can be ignored. determine the volumetric flow rate at the exit, in m3/s, and the compressor power, in kw.
