Consider a slab milling operation where a 4" diameter mill cutter with 16 teeth is being used to machine a flat surface on a workpiece. The material being cut has a specific (or unit) horsepower of 1 hp-min/in3. The cutting speed is 100 feet per minute (fpm) and the feed being used is 0.005 inches per tooth (ipt). A 2" wide cut at a depth of cut equal to V" will be made. As part of the tool design for the workholding fixture, determine the following: a) Maximum vertical force component generated during cutting that must be resisted by the workholding device b) Maximum horizontal force component during cutting generated during cutting that must be resisted by the workholding device c) Calculate hpg and hpc that will be needed in the operation if the machine tool is known to be 83% efficient.
