A rigid tank with a volume of 4 m^3 contains argon at 500 kPa and 30 deg C. It is connected to a piston cylinder (initially empty) with a line and a closed valve. The pressure in the cylinder should be 300 kPa to float the piston. Now the valvle is slowly opened and heat is transferred so the argon reaches a final state of 30 deg C with the valve open. The heat transfer takes place from a 60 deg C space through a conduction layer 1 cm thick with a conductivity k = 0.1 W/mK and a surface area of 1.5 m^2.

a. Find the final volume of the argon and the total work for the process.

b. Find the total heat transfer needed.

c. How long will the process take?

Air is to be cooled in the evaporator section of a refrigerator by passing it over a bank of 0.8-cm-outer-diameter and 0.4-m-long tubes inside which the refrigerant is evaporating at -20°c. air approaches the tube bank in the normal direction at 0°c and 1 atm with a mean velocity of 4 m/s. the tubes are arranged in-line with longitudinal and transverse pitches of sl- st 1.5 cm. there are 30 rows in the flow direction with 15 tubes in each row. determine (a) the refrigeration capacity of this system and (b) pressure drop across the tube bank. evaluate the air properties at an assumed mean temperature of -5°c and 1 atm. is this a good assumption?

Plot schematically the tensile stress versus strain curves for a typical thermoplastic material at a temperature below its glass transition temperature (tg and at a temperature above its tg, respectively. do the same for a typical thermosetting material. list in a table any differences or similarities between the two materials at t> tg and t < tg, respectively, and relate them to the structures of the two types of polymers
