As a first-year process engineer in industry, you have been tasked with modeling a CSTR carrying out an exothermic reaction. You have been assigned to an elementary reversible liquid-phase reaction, A B , that takes place in a CSTR with a heat exchanger. The feed to the reactor is pure A. Your company desires to sell B, but also wants to be careful about safety and excessive heat generation in the reactor. Additional data: UA = 3600 cal/min*K) E/R = 20,000 K V=20 dm3 Q.= 1 dm3/min FAo = 10 mol/min k=1 min. at 400 K Keq = 100 at 400 K Ambient temperature: T= 37C Feed temperature: T. = 37C Cpa= Cpb = 40 cal/(mol*K) AHRx = -80,000 cal/mol A) A: Derive expression(s) to calculate the "Heat Generated Term", G(T), and do a sample calculation for 400 K. B: What are the steady state temperatures (Hint: graphing this will help)? C: Which steady states are locally stable? Are any unstable, and if so, which one(s)? D: What is the conversion corresponding to the upper steady state? E: Make a plot of reactor temperature as a function of the ambient temperature Ta. We are looking for something that looks like the plot from L15-30. Use excel or your graphical software of choice. F: If the heat exchanger in the reactor suddenly fails, what happens to the UA term, and what would the conversion and reactor temperature be when the new upper steady state is reached (Hint: graphing this will help)? G: What value of UA will give the maximum conversion? H: Suppose you want to operate at the lower steady state. What parameter values would you suggest to prevent runaway?

Aloaded platform of total mass 500 kg is supported by a dashpot and by a set of springs of effective stiffness 72 kn/m. it is observed that when the platform is depressed through a distance x = 12.5 cm below its equilibrium position and then released without any initial velocity; it reaches its equilibrium position in the shortest possible time without overshoot. find the position and velocity of the loaded platform 0.10 sec. after its release. if a further load of 400 kg is added to the platform, find, i) the frequency of damped vibrations, and i) the amplitude of vibration after 2 complete oscillations, given that the initial amplitude is 15 cm.
