A circular steel [α = 6.5 × 10−6/°F] band is to be mounted on a circular steel drum. The outside diameter of the drum is 50 in. The inside diameter of the circular band is 49.95 in. The band will be heated and then slipped over the drum. After the band cools, it will grip the drum tightly. This process is called shrink fitting. If the temperature of the band is 72°F before heating, compute the minimum temperature to which the band must be heated so that it can be slipped over the drum. Assume that an extra 0.05 in. in diameter is needed for clearance so that the band can be easily slipped over the drum. Assume that the drum diameter remains constant.
