Consider the ionic salt, KCl (potassium chloride). The attractive and repulsive energies between the ions K+ and Cl depend on the distance r between them according to the following relationships:

Er=5.86x10-6/r^9
Ea = -1.436/r
En = EA +ER

where the energies are expressed in electron volts (eV) and the distance r is in nanometers (10°m). Eis the net potential energy between the ions.

(a) Using Excel, superimpose on a single plot EN, ER, and EA versus r, for r from 0.22nm to 0.5nm. Build the spreadsheet first and then plot the functions. Hint: Use a fine enough interval between r values such that you can see a minimum EN value.
(b) On the basis of this plot, determine (i) the equilibrium spacing r0 between the K+ and Cl– ions, and (ii) the magnitude of the bonding energy E0 between the two ions.
(c) Mathematically determine the r0 and E0values using the equations above and compare these with the graphical results from part (b)

Amass of 1.5 kg of air at 120 kpa and 24°c is contained in a gas-tight, frictionless piston-cylinder device. the air is now compressed to a final pressure of 720 kpa. during the process, heat is transferred from the air such that the temperature inside the cylinder remains constant. calculate the boundary work input during this process.

Along 8-cm diameter steam pipe whose external surface temperature is 900c connects two buildings. the pipe is exposed to ambient air at 70c with a wind speed of 50 km/hr blowing across the pipe. determine the heat loss from the pipe per unit length. (b) air at 500c enters a section of a rectangular duct (15 cm x 20 cm) at an average velocity of 7 m/s. if the walls of the duct are maintained at 100c. a) the length of the tube for an exit temperature of the air to be 40 0c. b)the rate of heat transfer from the air. c) the fan power needed to overcome the pressure drop in this section of the duct.
