Methanol is toxic for humans if they ingest liquid methanol or inhale methanol vapor in significant quantities. when inhaled in concentration greater than 1000 ppm, death has been reported. humans metabolize methanol into formic acid which is then converted into formate. formate deprives bodily tissues of oxygen. rabbits and rats are among a subset of animals which are not able to excrete as much formic acid, so they are not as sensitive to methanol as humans. the ld50 (lethal dose for 50% of a population) of rats is 64,000 ppm for four hours of exposure. some rats may become ill or die when inhaling concentrations around 44590 ppm. suppose an improperly capped bottle of methanol allows methanol vapor to escape into a room. at what temperature is the room when the equilibrium concentration of methanol vapor is 44590 ppm? assume that the atmospheric pressure in the room is 760 mm hg. (note: to convert ppm to mole fraction, divide the ppm number by 106.)

Amass of m 1.5 kg of steam is contained in a closed rigid container. initially the pressure and temperature of the steam are: p 1.5 mpa and t 240°c (superheated state), respectively. then the temperature drops to t2= 100°c as the result of heat transfer to the surroundings. determine: a) quality of the steam at the end of the process, b) heat transfer with the surroundings. for: p1.5 mpa and t 240°c: enthalpy of superheated vapour is 2900 kj/kg, specific volume of superheated vapour is 0. 1483 m/kg, while for t 100°c: enthalpy of saturated liquid water is 419kj/kg, specific volume of saturated liquid water is 0.001043m/kg, enthalpy of saturated vapour is 2676 kj/kg, specific volume of saturated vapour is 1.672 m/kg and pressure is 0.1 mpa.
